In recent years, the global spirits landscape has undergone a quiet but powerful transformation. What was once a market dominated by whiskey, vodka, rum, and gin is now welcoming a broader spectrum of craft, culturally-rooted, and heritage-driven spirits from around the world. From Japan’s delicate sake and Korea’s ubiquitous soju, to China’s ancient and bold Baijiu, there’s an unmistakable shift toward authenticity and provenance. Consumers are no longer just sipping—they're exploring.
At the heart of this movement is a growing demand for premium, narrative-rich products that offer more than just flavor. Today's drinkers—particularly Millennials and Gen Z—are open to discovery. They seek stories, sustainability, and a sense of connection to what’s in their glass. It’s in this spirit of discovery that Kontapel, a revived Ukrainian spirit brand, is making its quiet but confident debut in the American market.
Globalization has made the world smaller, but the spirits industry has made it richer. Indigenous beverages once limited to local consumption are now finding fans across continents. The rise of craft cocktail culture and the consumer’s appetite for novelty has opened the door to spirits with historical and regional depth.
This isn’t a passing trend—it’s a redefinition of what premium means. Consumers are no longer simply loyal to legacy labels; they’re intrigued by authenticity and craftsmanship, often choosing to spend more on something rare, unconventional, or meaningful. In this broader evolution Kontapel and its signature spirit, Kontabas, arrive not as a trend-chaser but as a torchbearer of history.
For most of the world, Ukrainian alcohol is synonymous with vodka—a legacy of Soviet influence that flattened a once-rich tapestry of regional drinks. But long before vodka’s dominance, there was Kontabas: a refined, slow-distilled spirit favored by Ukrainian nobility as far back as the 17th century.
This nearly-lost tradition was resurrected in 2018 by brothers Roman and Andrii Pelekh, after uncovering a forgotten batch of 1993 Kontabas and a handwritten recipe book in the cellar of their family’s property in Zakarpattia. What started as a personal passion project soon evolved into Kontapel, now the only brand in the world producing this spirit.
Today, Kontapel offers three carefully crafted expressions:
Each bottle is more than a drink—it’s a tribute to a culture, a reclamation of identity, and a bridge between the past and the present.

The American spirits market is crowded, no doubt—but it’s also curious. And that curiosity creates real opportunity. For importers and distributors, Kontapel presents something refreshingly rare: a high-quality, founder-led, heritage spirit with no direct competitors in the category.
Unlike mass-market brands, Kontapel operates with craft sensibility and cultural responsibility. Its entry into the U.S. will be deliberate, with small-batch availability and strong marketing support for early partners. In fact, distributors can begin working with Kontapel through a flexible self-distribution model, picking up products from U.S.-based inventory as the brand builds momentum.
The Kontapel team, led by Roman and his wife Maryna Pelekh, are not just selling a product—they're sharing a story. For importers who care about provenance, originality, and real value, Kontapel offers more than just margins. It offers meaning.
As the global spirits movement continues to gather pace, brands like Kontapel are proving that authenticity isn’t a niche—it’s the future. With a rich backstory, an uncompromising commitment to quality, and a product that’s both novel and grounded in tradition, Kontapel fits seamlessly into the evolving American palate.
And while Ukraine may be an unlikely source of the next great spirit, history tells us the best discoveries often come from the most unexpected places.
