What Judges Have to Say About USA Spirits Ratings

10/12/2024 Insights from Industry Experts on the USA Spirits Ratings Competition: What Judges Say About Quality, Value, and Innovation in Spirits.

The USA Spirits Ratings has quickly become a benchmark for evaluating spirits that excel in quality, value, and packaging. Each year, the judging panel comprises the leading trade buyers of national, regional, and independent retailers. Their insights offer a unique perspective on what makes a spirit truly stand out in today’s competitive market.

The USA Spirits Ratings competition is more than just a showcase of the finest spirits—it's an opportunity for industry professionals to connect, discover, and celebrate innovation in the world of spirits. Here’s what this year’s esteemed panel of judges had to say about their experience:

Tim Marson highlighted the unique judging approach and standout categories: “Judging the entries by value and packaging as well as on quality gives this competition a unique angle. The overall quality of entries was high, but fewer standouts than in some years. The Cognac and Irish Whiskey flights were the highlights of the day.

Jonathan Whitwell shared, “I liked the ability to chat with peers and the variety in spirits and brands. Interesting to see all the Indian whiskeys. I didn't realize there was so much decent stuff coming out of that region!” His remarks highlight the competition’s global appeal and its ability to introduce judges to exceptional spirits from unexpected regions.

For Teresa Dito, the competition is as much about camaraderie as it is about professional development. “Meeting new people and tasting spirits and judging them helps out with work in ordering spirits. It was very organized and fun to be a part of, my second year, and I’d love to be part of it again next year.

I love seeing gins and rums from Asia and lots more from new countries that are unexpected.

Many judges, like Tamir Benshalom (in the picture on the left), appreciated the smooth logistics and the joy of discovery. “The organization of it all. Great hosts and staff, and my company at the table! Simple, smooth, and a pleasure as always. Southeast Asian rums were a pleasant surprise!

Kimberly Morini praised the event's organization and impact: “It gave me insight into a lot of different brands in a variety of categories. I think the organizer is doing a splendid job, and the judging process is better than it’s ever been.
